From the Parish Administrator's Desk

January 29, 2016

Dear Families of St. Paul School:

Since being assigned to this parish and school community, I have witnessed the wonderful legacy and treasure that we have in St. Paul School. I also know that like so many Catholic schools across the country, maintaining enrollment and financial stability has been a long-standing challenge. Over the years, addressing that challenge has required the hard work and dedication of countless numbers of people, but the problems have persisted despite these efforts.

Here at St. Paul School, matters took on greater urgency in the past few years when it became clear that enrollment was simply inadequate to sustain our school. It also was well evident that St. Katharine Drexel Parish did not have the resources to keep the school afloat.

As part of the diocesan-wide School Sustainability initiative commissioned by Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., schools with enrollment and financial challenges were given help and support by the Diocese in order that they might have a two-year period to address their challenges and turnaround negative trends. Because St. Paul School was unfortunately unable to achieve that turnaround by the time allotted, an extraordinary fundraising campaign became necessary to keep the school open another year. That effort was thankfully successful, but it was made known that enrollment had to grow, and that any budgetary shortfall would have to be covered by ongoing fundraising efforts each year.

Because our enrollment problems persisted this year, the PTA and our local Sustainability Committee were charged with raising the projected 2016-2017 shortfall of $260,000 by January 29, 2016. Unfortunately, the established goal was not achieved as of today.

Out of consideration of the hard work that continues to be done by the fundraising groups, I am allowing extra time in the hopes that we can raise the necessary funds and see a positive enrollment trend based on our registration over the next four weeks. During the month of February, it is imperative that all current families who intend to enroll their children next year in grades K to 8 complete the registration process by Friday, February 29, 2016 which includes a registration fee of $150 per child. Your registration will be your commitment to have your child continue at St. Paul’s School in the 2016-2017 school year. The school community must continue the fundraising necessary to reach the goal of $260,000.

Please send all registration paperwork and fee(s) to the St. Paul School main office. Thank you for your incredible support of St. Paul School.

God Bless,

Rev. Christopher P. Picollo, Pastor
